Dear Austin & Michelle:

We are sad to report that we didn’t see any leprechauns on St. Patrick’s Day. We did hear the sound of a shoe hammer, but we never could find out where it was coming from! We think we were tricked by a very sneaky Leprechaun.

Do you know what happens next week? It’s the birthday of the Pony Express!

A long, long time ago, the mailman used to ride on a horse to deliver the mail. That was before they had cars and things like that. But, sometimes the mail had to be delivered far, far away. The mailman would get tired. So would the horse. So, they started the Pony Express.

What happened was .....

A bunch of mailmen would get in a line sort of like this:

The red mailman would pick up the mail. He would get on his horse and ride really, really fast until he found the blue mailman. The blue mailman would take the mail and ride really, really fast until he found the green mailman. The green mailman would take the mail and ride really, really fast until he got to the the mailbox. The green mailman would then deliver the mail to the mailbox. Isn’t that neat?

You can read more about it at the Pony Express Home Station. If that link doesn't work, try this one.

We think of you all the time. And, we really miss you. We love you lots and lots.

Mucho hugs and kisses,

Mister Hobbes & Miss Lanie
