Locations Where Items Were Found

NOTE: Carl hunted in Donaldsonville, Paincourtville, and in dirt hauled away from the area surrounding the Louisiana State Capitol, Barracks and Taylor House. Where possible, information is provided about where individual items were found. There are several places where items are identified as coming from "off-site dirt." This refers to dirt from the state capitol area that was hauled away during various construction projects. Carl followed the dirt and hunted at those off-site locations.

CASE # LOCATION WHERE ITEMS WERE FOUND
Case 1 Carl stored these items in a tin can. No notes were provided.
Case 2 Carl stored these items in a plastic box. There was a note that buttons were found in Baton Rouge and Donaldsonville in 1994 and 1995; however, there were no buttons in this box. Carla suspects that her father had been in the process of rearranging his collection and that the buttons to which he referred in this buttons were actually those he had stored in Case 6. Club pictures confirm that the Madonna & Child figurine found in fields of St. Emma Plantation (Site 5)
Case 3 Items placed in this shadow box by Carl, though there were no notes in the box. In a meeting on January 9, 2010 with Linda and Calvin Wiggs, Linda noted that the items in this box dated from the 1800's to the 1840's. One item also dated to the War of 1812 because it bore markings similar to that of an item in Albert's button book (page 23, G1 38). She noted that the ones with LA on it were most likely to be dated after the Civil War.
Case 4 Items placed in this shadow box by Carl, though there were no notes in the box.
Case 5 Items placed in this shadow box by Carl, though there were no notes in the box. However, there was a club photograph of the cartridge box plate. The photograph places the items in this case at Sites 4A and 4B, which are located at the Donaldsonville site along Highway 308.
Case 6 Items placed in this shadow box by Carl, though there were no notes in the box.
Case 7 Items placed in this shadow box by Carl, though there were no notes in the box. In a meeting on January 9, 2010 with Linda and Calvin Wiggs, Calvin suggested that these items were from downtown Baton Rouge, possibly from dirt hauled from the state capitol, Taylor house and/or Pentagon Barracks.
Case 8 Items placed in this shadow box by Carl, though there were no notes in the box. In a meeting on January 9, 2010 with Linda and Calvin Wiggs, Calvin suggested that these items were from downtown Baton Rouge, possibly from dirt hauled from the state capitol, Taylor house and/or Pentagon Barracks.
Case 9 Items placed in this shadow box by Carl, though there were no notes in the box. In a meeting on January 9, 2010 with Linda and Calvin Wiggs, Calvin suggested that these items were from downtown Baton Rouge, possibly from dirt hauled from the state capitol, Taylor house and/or Pentagon Barracks.
Case 10 Carl stored these items in a large cardboard box. These items were found on the top layer of the box. No notes were found in the box.
Case 11 Carl stored these items in a large cardboard box. These items were found on the bottom layer of the box. No notes were found in the box.
Case 12 Carl stored these in a ziplock bag (labeled by Carla as Bag A). There is a question as to whether Carl's note accompanying Case 14 applies to items in this bag as well.
Case 13 Carl stored these in a ziplock bag (labeled by Carla as Bag B).
Case 14 Carl stored these in a ziplock bag (labeled by Carla as Bag B subbag because it was a bag within the larger Bag B). There was a note that these items were found on January 13, 1996 in Donaldsonville site along Highway 308; however, there is a question about the placement of the note. Linda and Calvin Wiggs are going to look through club records to see if the date can be verified.
Case 15 Carl noted that these items were found behind the fire station at the Donaldsonville site along Highway 308 on April 19, 1997.
Case 16 Carl stored these items in a ziplock bag (labeled by Carla as Bag D-subbag 3). He placed it and two other bags within a larger bag (labeled by Carla as Bag D). No notes were included in this subbag.
Case 17 Carl stored these items in a ziplock bag (labeled by Carla as Bag D-subbag 2). He placed it and two other bags within a larger bag (labeled by Carla as Bag D). In it was a note indicating that these items were found in Paincourtville on January 13, 1996.
Case 18 Carl stored these items in a ziplock bag (labeled by Carla as Bag D-subbag 3). He placed it and two other bags within a larger bag (labeled by Carla as Bag D). In it was a note indicating that these items were found in Donaldsonville on December 30, 1995.
Case 19 Carl stored these items in a ziplock bag (labeled by Carla as Bag E). No notes were found in this bag.
Case 20 Carl stored these items in a ziplock bag (labeled by Carla as Bag E). No notes were found in this bag.
Case 21 Carl stored these items in a ziplock bag (labeled by Carla as Bag F). No notes were found in this bag; however, items in Case 21 believed to have been found in offsite dirt (per Linda Wiggs, January 19, 2010).
Case 22 Carl stored these items in a ziplock bag (labeled by Carla as Bag G-subbag 1). No notes were found in this bag.
Case 23 Carl stored these items in a ziplock bag (labeled by Carla as Bag G-subbag 2). No notes were found in this bag; however, Linda Wiggs believes these items were found in off-site dirt.
Case 24 Carl stored these items in a ziplock bag (labeled by Carla as Bag G; within Bag G were two smaller bags, see Case 24 and 23). No notes were found in this bag; however, there was an identification tag with Bargon, LA on it. In an email from Linda Wiggs, she said "I looked up Barton La and it is in Ascension Parish of of Bayou Lafourche. This case probably came from a field down there from our club sites. That makes sense with the amount of marbles that would have to have been picked up from the top of the ground, not by a metal detector! We could verify the area by seeing what location the Mardi Gras token came from."
Case 25 Carl stored these items in a ziplock bag (labeled by Carla as Bag H). All of these items were coins and included:
  • Cob (found in dirt from the West side of the state capitol)
  • Three Reale (two from Donaldsonville and one from Paincourtville)
  • Two coins from the New Orleans mint (one from Donaldsonville and one from Paincourtville)
  • Shield Nickel
  • Mis-stamped penny
  • Medal of some kind
